Im after a pair of warm trousers, mainly for dossing around camp, lying about in a tent, and occasionally sleeping in, to add a few degrees warmth to my sleeping bag.

Ive been looking at a few pairs.

Brit army Surplus Reversible 'softie' trousers. [A copy of the Snugpack Softie trousers] or the Snugpack Softie Trousers?
A pair of the Buffalo Special 6, or equivalent pile lined trousers?
Brit army extreme cold weather quilted liners aka the chinese fighting suit trousers or the M65 quilted field pant liners?
Nanok reversible SF trousers or Montbell [or similiar] down filled pants?

Never tried any of these on.

Is there a great deal of difference between them? Comfy is key.

Which would you go for?

I've got some snugpak pile pants for this task but I've not tried them out yet, its not been cold enough this winter when I have been out. My next outing will be beginning or March so I may get to use them then. I like the idea and my thoughts are pile will be better for sleeping in but they are bulky.

Yeh. I was leaning toward pile. Bulk's not a problem. I have kit for lightweight jaunts. These would only be taken in a vehicle.

Why not just add a decent base layer to your existing trews Dave, something like the Woolpower 200 or 400g leggings?

I bought a pair of Jack Wolfskin Atmosphere down pants last winter but it's not been cold enough to wear them yet, I bought mine online but I should think they'd be able to order some in at the Leeds store.

The Montane Prism or Rab Photon pants are supposed to be good but not tried either yet,

I normally wear woolpower 200 long johns, with nanok slippers, but have to slip my legs into the bag, otherwise they get cold. Just wanted a pair of comfy trousers I could slip into, which are resistant to cold spots, when Im sprawled on the groundsheet, in the tent, or occasionally nipping out under the tarp, to sit down on a chair. Maybe your'e right. Maybe Im being lazy. Just saves me taking off and putting on trews.

I use the Brit army Surplus Reversible 'softie' trousers; that with a set of bivvi boots = toasty.:)

Well, the attraction of those is they are certainly easiest on the wallet. If you rate them, I may just buy a pair, and give em a go.
I like to 'settle' in. Mmmm, Am I turning into a old fart?

I wear 200 or 400g woolpower under a pair of Bison Moleskin trousers, maybe not so comfy when your in your bag but certainly warm enough.

I personally just pack a base layer long john. My mate who does a lot of night fishing swears by his Craighopper thermal trousers he got from TK Max for £24.

Those jack wolfskin atmosphere pants look good, but I dont want to spend that much. Yep. Think I'll give those a go Martin....
Is it best to buy a size smaller than usual?

M65s with the button in liner, you can't go wrong, and nice to wear in your sleeping bag when you need to. You can get the liners pretty cheap on eBay. As for M65s, best trousers ever made in my opinion, but getting hold of him at a reasonable price is not as easy as it used to be. One other option I came across recently, you can get I lined version of the German 'moleskin' combats. Pretty cheap and basic but warm.

I'd go for your next size up as you will either be using them as a base layer in your bag or over your normal trousers.

All of them are worth a try

Used the Snugpak softie, Helly Hansen Fibre pile and the quilted liners and like them all.
So it depends on the weather and where your going. If anything the old quilted are warm easier in the rain and Very hard wearing.
