Hugo and i enjoyed a superb day out today, regrettably the third member of the terrible trio (Rockmonkey) had to work today so couldn't join us, so id thought a few pics up to show him what he missed
We started out in glorious sunshine and that luck stayed with us during the whole day.
even before we had really started, we were coming across some wonderful sign on the slopes of the lane
bit further up the lane
where we were heading for the day, the slope to the right of the Coombe
saw part the Deer Herd we followed last week, albeit in much reduced numbers
Finding the route we had intended to take blocked by a ploughed field, we decided to head on to Chanctonbury instead, not much further up the way in reality and it added some different scenery to our bimble
up past the big house and the iron bridge to their grounds
looking north over the fields
looking back down the lane
our objective, replace the Beech & Ash with Pine and it looks almost Alpine
Spring colour - lovely
heading up Chanctonbury and the seriously eroded path, millennia of feet (animal and Human) and more recently wheels (Mountain Bikes)
bit further up
The Hobbit House
Heading on up towards the summit
nearly there
Hugo enjoying the view over the Sussex Weald toward the North Downs
Time for a brew, we settled down under on of the old Beech trees on the summit and enjoyed the views south over the Downs and the English Channel
some of local girls, Rockmonkey would have been in his element in those wellies of his
we had a poke around some of midden mounds on the top, Chanctonbury is the site of some Iron Age earth works, but was also occupied by the Romans and evidence of their occupation is still to be found, for reference, we are 750ft ASL here and the shells are in localised piles
the something caught my eye, a Viviparous Lizard, wonderful to see, if a little camera shy
on the way back now over the top of the downs
looking South, my house is down that way somewhere
heading towards the trees in the background
and there at last
showed Hugo where the Badger Skull was and still is
then had another brew up, looked for some Iron Pyrite and didn't find any then headed out and back tot he car, bumped into my cousin walking his dogs on the way back so had a chin wag with him for a little while then back to the car and home
