Yup, you just tease a piece of the cotton wool out that will be covered in vaseline. It takes a spark really well. The only down side is making the stuff, what a mess!!!

Vaseline and cotton (100% pure cotton) makes super tinder. I have read where some people have had difficutly using it but they either were using some synthetic cotton or had way too much vaseline on the cotton.

A wood chip, vaseline/cotton and maya wood ready to spark.

Transfer the chip to the firepan and get ready for tea.

I usually take a cotton ball and a blob of vaseline, press this into a tin, add a pulled out cotton ball, press, add vaseline, add cotton, press...etc. Really pressing down on the cotton as I build the layers. Excess vaseline squeezes out and you have a container filled brim full of perfect tinder.

Excellent stuff. The easiest way I've found to make them is to melt the vaseline, then drop a pile of pure cotton balls int the mix so they are completely saturated. Then using a pair of long forceps, pull a cotton ball out and put it in a garlic press and give it a squeeze. This makes a nice cotton ball that is not overly saturated.

But no matter how much vaseline you squeeze out, it will still be greasy. That's why I am also a big fan of Tinder-Quick fire tabs. These will catch a nice spark, burn well, and you can store them loosely in small kits without worry that they will get the rest of your kit items greasy. The perfect tinder for mini kits where space is tight.

spoony,

Take a look at the article I wrote on that knife for details. There was no price at that time so you will have to contact Nick Wheeler for that. He meant this to be a blade kit knife sold by Alpha Knife Supply, but I am not certain if that project has launched, but the knife itself or one like it can be had from Nick.
