Hi Folks,

Any one got one of these and are they any good?

https://www.worldofcamping.co.uk/vango-4-x-4-tarp

Briefly, I have a Blacks of Greenock traditional (“Scout” type) dining shelter which I picked up in a sale last year and would like another one as semi-permanent summer rain shelter/sun shade but cannot justify the £250 full price.

Mrs N has specified no warry, camo tarps or utilitarian canvas tarps and ideally it should not turn into Swiss cheese at the merest hint of a spark in the air. The Vango tarp being made of polyester seemed a reasonable compromise at around £50 but I have no idea how heavy 70 denier is - old style Force 10 flysheet material?

Anyone used one and/or have any thoughts?

Cheers J

PS if anyone has a nice, clean Blacks dining shelter preferably in white taking up space in their garage, I’d be more than happy to take it to the tip for them! ;)

Denier is a measure of 'thickness' and is more commonly used in Hosiery, but since the introduction of lightweight camping / tent material it is more widely used, as 70 denier sounds better than 0.01mm. (or whatever 70D equates to)

Up to 40 denier is opaque and is used for womens' 'tights' (so that gives you an idea of what 40 denier looks like)

Here is a picture of 70 denier tights

Thanks, that’s a rather pleasing definition of 70d but one which I am struggling to translate into a tarp! Perhaps having another cup of tea and gazing at it for a little longer will make things clearer. ;)

I did G00gle converting denier to mm but found various conflicting suggestions other than 70d being the bottom (pun intended) of the “thick opaque” range. :)

I also searched for mm vs Denier but couldn't find anything 'meaningful'.

Try getting your head around this :

Thanks, my take on that table is that the denier : micron/mm ratio is not a straight line though tbh even if it was, I’m not sure I would be any further forward.

I found this summary of flysheet materials which lists Vango Protex 70d but it still doesn’t help me understand how the Vango tarp compares to traditional “duck” canvas like the Blacks tarp/dining shelter or DD one. I am assuming that it is unlikely to be significantly thicker (if at all) than the DD.

Be nice if manufacturers could sort out a consistent system rather than trying to compare ozs, hydrostatic heads, microns, mils and denier. :(
