Underwear.....

I hated underwear when I was a kid, with a vengeance, and I still do; my mother was cool enough to not force me to wear any, although she didn't like it. At sixty six years of age I still don't wear it, 'going commando' is,
I think, the phrase for it. I never have any problems with hygeine, nor do I have problems with persiration and none at all with chafing. I've walked a minimum of six miles a day for many years and often do twice that, I ride horses a good deal (and I don't mean happy hacking!) and I've never had occasion to even be conscious of the fact that I haven't got keks on.

I wear underwear for hospital and doctors appointments and sometimes my partner expresses a wish for me to wear it for some special occasions as she sometimes just becomes conscious of it, but whenever I do wear any I feel wrapped up and restricted and extremely uncomfortable.

Give it a try, it's a whole new world of freedom!

Merino wool is still wool. It's waaaaay to hot for hot weather (especially when compared to cotton. That said, if cotton boxers are still too warm there are at least three other options:
1) Switch from boxers to a simple jock strap
2) Silk
3) Go commando

Avoid synthetics at all costs as they are even hotter and more stinky

Just spent a rather warm week in the woods and frankly cotton boxers didnt work at all.
Im looking for alternatives. Resistant to sweatyness is a must
Suggestions folks?

You mentioned resistant to sweatyness and that makes me wonder; is the problem really the heat? Or maybe humidity?

uk mainly in the Midlands though
I have a couple of different sets that I use if not commando,

Bamboo is ok but the best for hot weather are :
1. Exofficio (I got 3 sets form a massdrop offer) really comofrtable and light and breathable cause of the mesh set up of them
2. power layer from baselayers.com
3. sport short I picked up at a trade show made from 92% poliamida 8% elastando unfortunately no brand or loose label on them so not sure who make them but I think it was Runderwear (just checked the web site and they look the same as what I have).

Over this warm period they have all been used and when I was running around a training area on the weekend they did sterling service.

When its hot i sweat. A lot. Hangover side effect from medication i used to take

Anyone know anything about bamboo as a material?
Merino seems pricey
And silk underwear is for the wife not me

To be honest silk boxers are a bit pricey too, but about 15 years ago I was able to get several pair at about the same price as cotton ones and they were fantastic even here. Also truth be told, most synthetics are only trying (poorly) to imitate silk. The idea of bamboo sounds promising (maybe even linen) but I doubt it'll be particularly cheap either?

My vote would be for jock strap... they're surprisingly comfortable.

Never tried going commando though... what do you do if you have to change trousers when you're out and about?

The Rainy Side of the Lakes.
I've been very disappointed with bamboo; it's basically rayon which a synthetic cotton substitute and it seems to have all the properties of cotton without the comfort.

merino boxers are very lightweight and thin (about the same as my usual cotton boxers) and have finally persuaded me to change over from synthetic kegs for outdoor use. They are expensive - I got mine "cheap", three pairs for £50 (there's still a little voice in my head screaming "How @<*&ing much for 3 pairs of shreddies!") but having worn them several times in he last couple of months, including on our warmest days so far, I don't regret buying them. I won't need to buy any more for the winter either.

Cheers, Michael.

Just change them.......I can't see what the problem would be?

Cotton underwear is not comfortable. I found that a type of microfibre knicker made by M&S and sold as "No VPL", are very effective, they wick sweat reasonably well, dry very quickly. They are also so light that you can take a dozen pairs for a negligible weight.

I have no idea if the menswear section of the store has anything similar, but might be worth a look. Either way, lose the cotton.

Underarmour heat gear shorts, cracking bits of kit all year round.

Same as.

It's not unusual for me to cycle to and from Meets and/or go for a run during camps/Meets so, for me, they're a good and apt choice :approve: :D . You still need to maintain the hygiene but, under energetic/sweaty conditions, I rub/chafe less using a single pair of UnderArmour Heat Gear shorts for a week long camp than I do using day to day underwear for a day/24hrs ~ because the UnderArmour is designed for getting sweaty in and the supermarket specials are intended to be changed? ;)

I can't believe I am discussing my underwear with strange men on the internet...

Two thoughts ...

I don't need the internet in order to be strange ;)

And, it's probably a discussion made safer by distance?
