Just for fun.

Let's see if we can get a picture of a spoon made from the wood of every native UK tree species (give or take).

I've extracted the list below from Wikipedia, and then adjusted it slightly so you don't have to be a trees expert to contribute to the thread. There is quite a bit of debate about what is a native species, and which species should be included, but that's a debate for elsewhere. This thread is my idea, so lets go with the list below. :)

Basically, post a picture of your spoon, saying which wood it is, and then copy and paste the list below, adding your name to the species you have just 'bagged'.

To prevent prolific spoonmakers bagging all the common species too quickly, let's alos enforce a 'one spoon per post' rule. Feel free to bag more than one species, but you need multiple posts to do it.

The artisitic merit of the spoon that you post is irrelevant. I'm just hoping for nice variety of spoons.

The list:
  1. Alder
  2. Crab Apple/Apple
  3. Ash
  4. Birch (Silver or Downy)
  5. Beech
  6. Box
  7. Wild Cherry
  8. Bird Cherry
  9. Blackthorn
  10. Wych Elm
  11. Smooth Leaved Elm
  12. Hawthorn (Common or Midland)
  13. Hazel
  14. Hornbeam
  15. Holly
  16. Juniper
  17. Lime (Small or Large Leaved)
  18. Field Maple
  19. Pedunculate (English) Oak
  20. Sessile Oak
  21. Scots Pine
  22. Aspen
  23. Black Poplar
  24. Rowan
  25. Whitebeam
  26. Wild Service Tree
  27. Willow (any)
  28. Buckthorn (Alder or Purging)
  29. Elder
  30. Dogwood
  31. Spindle
An Arbitrary list, but there you go. Some will be easy, some less so. Making a spoon to fit the list would be wonderful.

No prizes, but can we, collectively, complete this list?

Great thread! Is it an idea to add the wood-type as a footnote with all the pictures, like Fishfish did? Once there are many it might be difficult for people (read: me) to tell them apart.

By the way, if we get this list moistly completed, i will start one for naturalised non-native species, as there's a respectable list of those too.

But one thing at a time.

Fantastic work from the posters here, very well done indeed. My first attempt at a spoon was from a bit of (what I thought was green) Birch but it had dried a bit so was very hard to carve. I have it all basically done but need to spend a bit of time just finishing off and dressing it. It'll be nowhere as good as some of the stuff just posted so well done again, chaps!
