Hi, apologies if this is in the wrong section. My long awaited Durston X-Dome 1+ has finally hit customs and I have £98 or so to pay, about £30 of which is import duty. It’s my understanding that camping goods from Canada have a zero tariff. Does anyone know how I go about it? Do I pay the full £98 to Feddex, then put in a claim to customs, or do I query it with Feddex- it all looks rather complicated, as far as I can ascertain, the tariff no. (?) for tents is 62. Although, I can ill afford it, I was thinking to just pay it and try to claim, in case querying it vastly delayed its passage through customs. :(

My understanding is that you’d still need to pay VAT if the item is worth more than £135, and that is charged at 20% of the total package value (including P&P and all that).

The only alternative is if the company explicitly says the price includes VAT for deliveries to the UK, in which case they should have paid it.

You can try and fill out a form with HMRC to claim it back but strictly speaking the tent originated from Canada but was not manufactured or even assembled in Canada.

It depends on the origin of manufacture as well as where it is shipped from. If you can prove the whole thing is manufactured in Canada you can expect 20% VAT only; without proof of point of manufacture, or if Durston get the tent made elsewhere where UK does not have a trade agreement, there will be another 12%.

You can request a statement of origin from Durston.

Thank you everybody for your swift replies.:) I’ll just pay and enjoy using it, life’s too short to mess about. I was prepared for the charges, just thought I’d ask, just in case

Some people on the forum have claimed it back so you could try the form with HMRC. I’m looking forward to mine, did you get the standard pole length? I went short pole for bikepacking and ease of packing into my dry bags.

Thanks, pretty sure they’re made in China.

Hello there. I noticed you imported a tent from Canada. I am considering the same. Do you know anything that may help me. The tent (which does not include pole and pegs) is £370 and £60 postage. What might I expect to pay on that in charges do you think? thanks in advance. DD x

Hello there anyone who has commented on this. Can you help please. I am wanting to buy a tent on Ebay from Canada. it costs £370 plus £60 postage. The tent is made in Canada and the seller will label the customs papers as such with proof. Will I have to pay anyone anything? or is this just a straightforward purchase? thanks in advance. DD xxx

eBay will sometimes say in the blurb whether it's part of their programme where you pay all import fees up front as part of the transaction. If it doesn't say that, then expect to pay 20% VAT and an additional handling fee from the courier.

Thats right the ebay up front is an option. As it stands mine is £430 incl post. The Ebay option for all fees paid is £670. I had to laff. Just what planet do these people live on? there is no import duty on this as the tent is made in canada but the vat at 20% is a given, What concerns me is the courier. They have already charged me £60 can they then demand more on delivery? thanks for your time Hugh x

You can claim it back if it’s made in Canada. You might be able to claim it back if it’s sold from Canada but made elsewhere. EBay only calculate the import duties they are told to. They don’t get into the finer details of what items are exempt.

The courier should only charge the amount quoted if they are not collecting VAT and import duties.

How will I know if they are going to collect the vat etc?

If you're doing it through eBay's shipping programme in my experience it's all included in what you've already paid. If you don't use that system, then the shipping fee you pay tends to only cover the delivery side of things and not the costs they (supposedly incur) in doing the admin for your import charges, in addition to the HMRC charges. It does depend on the exact shipping method you elect to use though, as you can pay extra up front to avoid future charges.
That total from eBay sounds ridiculous though, do they provide a breakdown in the costs?
