Hi, apologies if this is in the wrong section. My long awaited Durston X-Dome 1+ has finally hit customs and I have £98 or so to pay, about £30 of which is import duty. It’s my understanding that camping goods from Canada have a zero tariff. Does anyone know how I go about it? Do I pay the full £98 to Feddex, then put in a claim to customs, or do I query it with Feddex- it all looks rather complicated, as far as I can ascertain, the tariff no. (?) for tents is 62. Although, I can ill afford it, I was thinking to just pay it and try to claim, in case querying it vastly delayed its passage through customs. :(

My understanding is that you’d still need to pay VAT if the item is worth more than £135, and that is charged at 20% of the total package value (including P&P and all that).

The only alternative is if the company explicitly says the price includes VAT for deliveries to the UK, in which case they should have paid it.

You can try and fill out a form with HMRC to claim it back but strictly speaking the tent originated from Canada but was not manufactured or even assembled in Canada.

It depends on the origin of manufacture as well as where it is shipped from. If you can prove the whole thing is manufactured in Canada you can expect 20% VAT only; without proof of point of manufacture, or if Durston get the tent made elsewhere where UK does not have a trade agreement, there will be another 12%.

You can request a statement of origin from Durston.

Thank you everybody for your swift replies.:) I’ll just pay and enjoy using it, life’s too short to mess about. I was prepared for the charges, just thought I’d ask, just in case

Some people on the forum have claimed it back so you could try the form with HMRC. I’m looking forward to mine, did you get the standard pole length? I went short pole for bikepacking and ease of packing into my dry bags.

Thanks, pretty sure they’re made in China.
