For the last few days I've been clearing out junk from Coed Ystrad just outside Carmarthen town in Wales and was wondering if anybody knows what on Earth this thing is?
It's about three feet long and the middle bit with the tubes turns, thought is was some kind of wheel axle when digging it out.

Looks like the innards out of an old immerser.....huge great copper tank that augmented the hot water system of the back boiler of the coal fire.
Cost a fortune to run, but heated the entire upstairs of the house :D

You put the unit into the churn and pumped cold water around it - like an immersion heater in reverse....
I have seen these made into "sculptures" of stands of mushrooms :)

I am pretty sure its for cooling milk churns.

Good spot. Isn't it funny how things, once common, become an object of mystery.

A while ago I went for a stroll with a couple of callow youths and they had a five minute argument about the purpose of the platforms at the end of each farm lane - mostly brick, some concrete, usually square but not always. Eventually one turned to me and said "do you know?"

Of course - its where they used to stand the milk churns for collection

"Oh", said one. Then after thinking for a bit "How did they get the milk into the tanker from the churns?"

:) I am officially old.
