First find an area where they're likely to be  Oak with a birch nearby I was taught, but the link I've added says Hazel  :) Then try a warm morning after a damp night, and you ought to be able to smell them too, but not apparantly if you are a smoker or are hungover or haven't washed after a busy night   (I still miss all the smileys we used to have :( )

I dont stand a hope in hell then.
I have all of those vices and more to boot. :(

I was told to watch the wildlife (particulary squirels) . Apparently they dig up a lot of them .

I think it's back to know your area, and like Pumbaa said, watch it's wildlife, again. Best of luck with it.

Squirrels ( I am told ) get soooooooo excited when they find a truffle

Look for scuffed up patches in the moss / leaf litter where they have started digging

Poor squirrels literally dance for joy and end up forgetting all about the truffle

Trick is to open the hole up a little and get your hand under the grass/ moss etc and widen out in a circle. There is a definite layer that separates easily. Once you feel the truffle you can take it out and press the grass back down, it will not cause too much damage, just like relaying turf really

Happy hunting

Without a trained pig or dog does anyone know of any above ground way of locating truffles?

Look for a swarm of very small flies near the ground by an oak, beech or hornbeam.

I've not tried, but I've been told that this method works for the black Périgord truffle.

I don't know about the white Italian truffle.
