Yesterday I went to Akers Of Strawberries www.akersofstrawberries.com (no affiliation) a local farm mostly known for it's pick-your-own strawberries. However strawberry season is week gone now and I treated myself to a a strawberry shotcake topped with home made strawberry yogurt from their on site bakery/snack shop. The I shopped around their other local produce and wares.

Now I was expecting to be envious of prices - I usually am with the US. However those prices seem very high to me - and cabbages at $2.50 is eye wateringly expensive compared to here. That said I live in lush farming country and things are cheap where I live!

Yeah. They're high here as well if you compare them to supermarket prices for bulk raised crops (in the supermarkets green cabbage is about 30 cents per pound, red cabbage a bit more) The premium prices compensate the extra labor for small farm raised crops locally and the overhead for the small shop compared to the bulk savings at a big box store.

Thats very interesting. In our county, buying "at the gate" is cheaper than the supermarkets (although of course the farmers get more than they would from supermarket buyers)

Some items get a "local", organic or "free range" premium - eggs for example. But my eggs (from my neighbour) are £1.80 a dozen for laid today, organic free range eggs - which is still less than the Supermarket.

Yeah. It seems ironic to me too. That said, I'm willing to pay a bit more (within reason) for fresh, local produce when I can get it. LOL. Mind you, I didn't get the cabbage!

Those are their posted prices but I must have gotten cheaper!? My total bill for both the cantaloupe and the quart of peas was less than $7.
