The Leaves and Flowers

The Bark

This is the Sweet Chestnut Castanea sativa

Of course famous for its nuts that may be eaten raw or cooked or ground to a flour.

The wood is used young for some woodworking but is a poor wood for uses other than fencing or decorative uses.

The leaves can be crushed to extract a soapy material (although the Horse Chestnut is superior)

An infusion of the leaves makes a good cough remedy

YAY! I got this one from the first pic :D That's one of the few I can identify (from the leaves).

As an aside, there's some trees along the roadside here that have Sweet Chestnut like leaves, but the bark is like a flowering cherry. Any ideas what they might be. They look semi-mature, but have suffered from years of Sheffield Blight. I keep meaning to take a closer look, and then look them up.
