The bark - not the shape of the bark
This is a Holm Oak or Evergreen Oak Quercus Ilex
A useful tree - the wood is hard and durable as with other oaks and will burn when green
The bark is good source of tannin for tanning leather
The acorns (sweeter than normal) can be ground to a flour (although the tannin must be leached out to make it palatable) or roasted and ground to make a coffee substitute
Galls (raised lumps un the bark) have astringent properties and are useful in the treatment of dysentry and diarrhoea
