Tree Needles

Off which of the pines is this? Its soft to touch, very pliable. Seems like maybe a young shoot. Picked it up off a footpath in a mixed wood. It's a bit like a Christmas tree and very floppy!

If it is soft it is more likely to be from a fir (Abies) than spruce (Picea). The needle's fastening point also looks like Abies but slightly difficult to see. As a guess in the UK it could be any of about ten sp.

If the needles are flat = Abies. If the needles are square in cross section = spruce/ Picea.
That looks like the buds opening on the big spruce in my front yard.
