best way to lern is to get a pocket sized book and go to the woods. iv got the collins book like martin suggested and its very good.
dont get bogged down with latin names and at first just lern the basic species eg just oak instead of distinguishing between english oak, sessile oak, turkey oak etc.

heres a list of the most common trees you can find in the UK to get you started. some are more or less common depending on where you are.

oak
ash
beech
birch
hornbeam
willow
sweet chestnut
horse chestnut (very different)
hazel
elm
sycamore
field maple
scots pine
larch
poplar
aspen
blackthorn
hawthorn
wild cherry
rowan/mountain ash
lime

less common but well worth knowing

crab apple
walnut
wild pear
wild service
damson

some others you will find in plantations/forestry trees

hemlock
spruce
grand fir
douglas fir
western red cedar

i will probably remember some more later lol
hope this helps you:)

Cant go wrong with the Collins guides IMO.
Also if youre beginning on id'ing plants,it would be big help to buy a colour coded guide.Start by learning a few off by heart then go from there.
