The basic method of setting press studs in leather is straightforward, e.g. as shown in the diagrams here: http://www.leprevo.co.uk/photos/t14.html

However, particularly when setting in thin leather, and when using steel based press studs, you may find that the stem of the male base piece (item D in the diagram) bends over, rather than just splaying out. This results in an occasional stud that comes loose in use.

This doesn't seem to happen with brass based studs but, rather perversely, Le Prevo's small ring spring brass based studs are only available in a bronze finish, whereas if you want a brass coloured finish, you need to buy steel based studs.

I was finding that it only happened occasionally (perhaps 1 stud in 50) but often enough to be a nuisance.

I discovered this Tandy video on how to set the studs, just the other day, and following the technique in there seems to have solved the problem - all studs now peen over without the stem bending. It's the rotation of the setting tool as you hammer that is the key (illustrated at 30s and 1m10s in this video: http://www.tandyleather.eu/en-gbp/Setting-Snap-Fasteners-Line-20-S.aspx)

Hope this is useful.

Geoff :)
