"How would you feel about taking the kids to Katterjokk?" my wife asked me just last week. The company she works for has a cabin, of sorts, there. (9 rooms w bunk beds, a kitchen w 4 stoves etc). Function over comfort, but it is the bees knees in my eyes.
THe plan was to take the kids for a hike in the mountains. Just to get out to see the marvelous autumn colours, and after a short discussion we aggreed that a hike to Rissajaure would be perfect. It is a 12 km hike and it would be a perfect first time for the kids, we thought.
After a 5 hour drive and a nights sleep we set out 9 in the morning. The weather left much to be desired - we had 50 m visibility in the fog. But after a 5 hour drive, you try to make the most of it....so off we went.
Perhaps the fog was a good thing - it hid the fact that we had a bit of uphill walking to do.
After 2 hours of walking the sun started to break through and it turned out to be my best gamble ever
Here comes the sun
The valley is aptly named Rock Valley (Geargevággi in Saami)
The first attempt on freeze dried - Taco Stew won over Carbonara. High wind made it a bit hard to get the Optimus 123 heated enough. The Sigg Tourist wind shield had to be augmented with backpacks and rocks.
Re-fueling station
Final pit-stop before reaching the car
The kids were real troopers (albeit with ALOT of opinons). The day after we asked them if they wanted to go back.....and the kids (who rarely agrees on anything) said in unison: "Noooooo!!!!"
Cheers,
Greger
