There are many ways of utilising the various barks we have in this country. This is just one.
This is a small tinder container but the technique can be used to make much larger ones for berry or nut collecting. The bark I have used here is lime, as I see many of you are finding it difficult to source suitable birch bark. It's all about experimenting !
Score along length of log and then prise bark upward
Pull strip off
Using knife slice away outer bark
You should be left with long strips about 3 mm thick
Roll up and leave to dry
Cut strips to desired size and taper ends
Roll bark around stick
Cut lids from seasoned wood
Glue tapered end with resin
Cut small strip for inside of lid and glue in leaving 5 mm above top of lid
Cut and abrade lid to fit. Then glue in place
Using bone awl to make holes for willow thread
Stitch in
There we have it
Container will hold quite a lot of tinder for all those fires we all like so much
