I've acquired a felling axe about 6lb made by Thomas Turton of Sheffield.

My questions are, is anyone familiar with this maker making axes? My googling seems to turn up mainly spring manufacturer and more recently drilling equipment for mining.

Secondly, I've given it a light going over with a flap wheel and a bit of a file which has exposed some quite heavy pitting in the steel, is this workable allowing me to desire this axe to some of its former glory or has it gone too far?

It cost a tenner so I'm still pretty pleased with it!

Looks usable to me. A 6lb axe won't be for fine work so you don't need a perfect edge.

I'd use it how it is for a bit before doing anything more.

Is that the original handle?

I have some other axes for the finer stuff :)

No, I don't think the handle is original but I think the head is pretty old.
