I use one for all my leather work, great piece of kit. Be careful you don't leave an imprint on the leather when you push it through.

As an absolute novice can I ask how do you stop the threads from running (bond the seam as well maybe.) if they get a nick or is this something I shouldn't have concerns about.

The waxed thread is pretty tough but to protect the thread the leather usually has an indented seem to make it flush with the leather surface and not exposed to ware. Its scored along the thread line to make it recessed. If it does burst, its easy to over-stich it with a repair using the awl.
