Lycurgus passed a law that Spartiates could only use an axe and a saw to build their houses...

Surely this is too simple a toolkit? (Even assuming that the Spartans used the poll of their axe as a hammer or some such perversion?)

What would you do?

Or should it read ...Only use an axe and a hammer and helots with housebuilding skills to build a house?

Hahaha, he probably intended to discourage them from blunting their spears on Helots ;)

I assume that the Spartiates were too busy posing and going to parties...The helots built the house for them.

Here is one answer,,,

Houses were made out of sun-dried brick on a foundation of stones. Sun-dried brick was not a dependable material and often crumbled. Burglars were termed “wall piercers” because they broke through the walls to gain entry into homes. Roofs were made of overlapping clay tiles. Andron room floors were sometimes tiled, but the flooring of the rest of the rooms was packed dirt.
