I am no good at recommending modern packs, because I don't use one. My knapsack is plain & simple & not very large. I like plain & simple gear, uncomplicated gear.
Here you can see I have added my half-age to my blanket roll as I have some heavier cutting work to do on this particular trip. The blanket roll is tied to the knapsack straps, my oilcloth is secured under the knapsack flap closure. I don't roll my blanket into my oilcloth unless I am travelling on the water. If it rains or snows, I like to be able to get at the oilcloth easily so I can cover myself & my pack.
My knapsack used to be a haversack, but I converted it to a knapsack as many 18th century haversacks were.
