The ideal small axe

Hello.
I am looking for a small hand axe, but I am undecided about what to get. I already have a GB Mini and a GB SFA. the Mini is ok for carving, and the SFA is great for heavier stuff, but I want somethig in between. I want something well balanced and not too heavy. I'm sure that many of you have experience of using this type of axe and I wanted to hear some pros and cons of different types and some personal recommendations. all thoughts on the subject welcome

There are a few factory hand forged around in the size you want - notably a GB wildlife hatchet, Wetterlings small hunting etc. I would go with a Reeves single or double bit if you have both money (going to catch you for over £100 with shipping and duty) and time (12 month waiting list). These will weigh in around the 500g mark.

A Cegga BR axe is smiliar in size to a GB wildlife hatchet and weighs about 650g but is more polished etc.

I have a Wetterlings Large Hunter - took a little work to get the bevel right, but good value. They do a variety of smaller axes from the 10" belt axe (smiliar to your mini) through a 13" and 14" helve lengths. You might be best off bringing the one you want in from the US as I did. Will still be cheaper. If you are confident in re-finishing, you get a lot of axe for your money
