Good on you Tengu! Wear what you want. The kilt long predates any Scottish border.

There is an old Trivial Pursuits question:
Which is the odd one out and why?

Bagpipes
The kilt
Chicken Tikka Masala
Whisky
Porridge.

Edited to add:
What’s wrong with wearing Loud Macleod?

Chicken tikka masala? The only one actually of scottish origin?

Yes, I thought a nice combination of delicate and bright.

Still, a lot of sewing.

And if I dont get on with it, a lot of unpicking...to use elsewhere.

(Guess who never got on with saris??)

Mod note. Spammer post.

This has been a really informative discussion. I hadn't realised how much the choice of fabric, weight, and width affects how a Great Kilt performs in real outdoor use.

While reading more about traditional tartan kilt construction and the differences between modern and historical styles, I found a guide that explains the basics quite well for beginners. I thought it complemented some of the points being discussed here.

For those with more experience, would you recommend a heavier wool tartan for someone planning to wear a Great Kilt outdoors regularly, or is a medium-weight fabric more practical?

For some reason kilts are a favourite topic of Indian and Pakistani spam. Kilts and leather jackets!
And historic military uniforms. Some of merchants concerned actually do a reasonably good job, others not so much. Some are good at some items, and dire at others. Sometimes it just depends on who's at the sewing machine that day. If you're the sort of person who isn't adverse to the odd trip to the bookies dealing with them can work out very for you... Or not. ;)
