I took these photographs while doing an inventory of Siberian flying squirrel nesting trees and the animals itself in the coast of Southern Finland. According to the European Union directive, these animals must be protected from the forestry and finding one of these from a forest can stop entire housing projects. A fine of 1009 ⬠is placed of killing of a single flying squirrel.
Being located in the immediate vicinity of the coast, these forests are often cold and moist. Furthermore, the underlying soil is mainly composed of clay. These circumstances combined with occasional high wind speeds create an environment of the Finnish version of a thicket: a lot of roots above the ground, thin and fairly strong saplings growing in dense numbers everywhere et cetera.
