Hello saw an old film a bout indians building a birch bark canoe. In that clip there was a segment of an indian woman purifying spruce resin by boiling it in a cloth bag an spoon out the resin that float on the water. Tried it today and it worked great! Just make sure you don't poke a hole in the cloth. I used an old pillow case. With this method the spruce resin get as pure as it get! Not quite "glass grade" like Walter White would have said though but I'm happy :). The aluminum pot I bought for 5 Swedish kronor second hand. The first picture is just after I've refilled the pot with water that's why it isn't boiling. Collect the resing with the spoon and drop it in cold water.

I saw one where Ray Mears built one as well with a chap called Pinnock. Seemed to be good info on there. Its a pity birch in most parts of the country doesn't have the right sort of thickness for the bark or it would be one I'd consider as a long term project.
