Is this the best firelay to use for boiling water in a single pot on the go?

I know it's the simplest and quickest firelay but in terms of heat output vertically will the teepee shape make for better thermal efficiency due to the lay forcing the heat mainly vertically?

it not so much as the shape of the fire although this is important, in the terms of heat output its the type of wood that you burn. resinous woods burn hotter but don't last as long so better for quicker tasks like boiling. whereas hardwoods produce longer consistent heat over a longer period, so better for longer types.
soft woods for boiling
hard woods for broiling
I think that how the old saying goes

For boiling water with wood as a fuel, if you want efficiency then there's not much to beat the Kelly/Ghillie style or their equivalents. They're not just efficient, they're also fast and they'll burn wood that wouldn't be so easy to burn on a small fire.

Yeah they are great but i'm looking for open fire stuff.

i use open fire all the time, normaly use the Tee Pee fire as its easy really... it produces good embers to put your pot on and the remaining fire i push up against the pot to help it boil even quicker....

for good heat smaller fuel is better, finger size stuff, it burns quickly though so might use more than you think...

hope this helps.
