Tarps

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Im guessing shelter from rain, sun etc.

I was working along those lines too   .

But I was also thinking about whether to use the tarp in different configurations might be desirable ;) . And also whether it was for one or more people? are trek poles likely to be available for use in rigging? is bike touring a potential area of use?* is it for use over a hammock? et.c

* Twofold reasoning, a slightly larger tarp would give a work area for maintenance and some set-ups can make use of a bike in their rigging :D .

I would go for TW. They are top notch and weve had a few bits from them. Nothing is zipped or frayed. I would go for the 4.2x3m tarp with doors. Also email neil at TW and he gives you a better price. The 3x3 only just covers your hammock.

As big as you want to carry. Army basha (2x3m) for minimal, 3x3 for a dd banana hammock or a 4.5x3m for an Asym hammock. Bigger gives you more options like teepee configurations. Bigger is also. More weight. A 3x3 is a good buy as it can make a basic ridge with groundsheet in one.

I've no experience of the TW stuff yet but it looks like well thought out gear, I've had three or four DD's over the years though and they've been great. Not the lightest but they keep you dry and offer plenty of pitching options.

I heard the camo ones had some tearing issues early on but I believe Nick sorted that out.

The 3x3 can be a bit short for hammocking but a palace if you're on the deck.

have a look at the terra nova ultra 1 tarp its made from the same material as the laser compitition tents and weighs in at just 88g !!!And the good news is its just been reduced to the low low price of £239.99 !!! LOL. TRUE !

cheers andrew.

I ve got a DD 3x3 at the mo , but find if you use a Hammock then it only just long enough, and in the winter when you want a closed end it just does not give you the room inside, one ends are closed, I have had no Problems with mine so far and will be getting a XL tarp in the near future.

the DD ones are great, top notch, but can be a little pricey. They were the first I bought, however I thought about it, and for what it is (just a plastic sheet essentially) you can buy VERY cheap ones on amazon, 3.5x3 etc for about 10 quid or something, i have two from amazon and they have lasted me a year, with no problems and are still going strong. They come with metal eyelets as well, so I'd advise that, you may have to replace them once every couple of years (if that!) depending on how frequently used. But for the price, its a no brainer for me!
