Tarp door closures ????

Hi Hi

I've recently lengthend my tarp - it was 2,8m which I felt was a bit short for my hammock now it is 4.1m. I reckon I could now fold the ends in to close the tarp of to create a more contained shelter if need be.

I thought of running a zip along the edges, but I'm not keen on the idea of a zip for visual purposes.

I thought of a toggle system, but if done like a jacket there will be multiple toggles to fiddle with to open/close. I remember seeing a method where the straps were fed through each other with one toggle at the end to hold the whole lot in place - so it's quick to open, although relatively long winded to close. My google skills have failed me and I cannot find any pictures of suitable toggle closures for my tarp for reference.

How do you close your tents/ tarps?? any suggestions??

I don't know what its called, but I know what you are on about. A series of loops that feed through an eyelet and then through the next loop and so on down the closure - if anything comes up I'll put a link.....

Sounds like Dutch lacing to me too. You dont necessarily need a row of eyelets and a corresponding row of loops; you can do it with a length of line and 2 rows of matching eyelets. That way, when you're not wanting to close-up the end of your tarp, there is only an unobtrusive and aesthetically tolerable row of eyelets along the edge of your tarp. I'll see if I can find a pic.

Yes - Dutch lacing - brilliant

tried all combinations of the words toggle, closure, tent, tarp - never thought of dutch or lacing!

and it only took 30 mins to get a correct answer - fantastic

Hmmm my tarp is very thin nylon I've tried to put eyelets in off cut bits before which pulled out all too easily. So if I go down the eyelet route I'll have to edge with thicker material [weight! - I'm having a go a making an ultra lightweight bit of kit ]

Mine don't fasten closed at all they just over lap and are pegged out with bungee cord. Have a look at the warbonnet superfly to see what I mean.

Yes I did wonder about just staking out the ends together, but I thought the wind may part the edges so some way to connect them together at least at intervals somehow.

The tarp is only 2.4m wide [so a 1.2m edge needs to be closed] I may just overlap the door edges further to avoid this problem. It will really have to wait for some better weather and perhaps some lighter evenings as it is still pitch black when I finish work to get out in the garden to string it up and have a play.

I just had a toggle solution in my mind and was trying to remember how it went.

Greyhound clips would be an even faster method!

You could go with corresponding snap poppers. They are easily fitted and can lead to some interesting possibilities. The army uses them on ponchos for a good reason. They are aesthetically acceptable and have a built in maximum strain release. If you got really carried away you could make snap on sides, doors or undersheet etc. A suspended undersheet would be an interesting development, I haven't see one done yet.

Just cut some small squares of PVC to pad out the eyelet, you dont have to do the whole seam.

Instead of a punched eyelet, why not sew a length of tape to the tarp, with the length 'looped' up at regular intervals?
