Thought i might have a go at tanning some rabbit & squirle skins this year. So how do I go about it.

I know that I've got to clean the skin and remove the fat. Peg it out and leave it to dry. But what to use as a tanning agent?

I was also thinking of smoking the hide (got a nice chimney so might as well use it) after the tanning - is it worth it?

There's been a fair amount of threads on tanning, have a search...

Brain is a favorite, egg is also possible, bark. The list goes on.

Cheers

It's a nice method but has one problem - acid tanned skins absorb water easily and go clammy on cold damp days. Of course you can oil them to get round that, does neat's food oil still exist?
