Tempting, but not sure it's of that much use to me at the moment. But for guys doing their own bushcraft classes or felling in public places might be more interested. As I'm not a shooter I think I'll give it a miss, but thanks for the heads up.

Spandit, you have to remember that most people don't want to expend any money or effort on the land or land management. To them the land is a leisure park that they should have free use of and other people should pay for.

I will be intrigued to see how many people are willing to pay in on the land (as opposed to those who merely want to take from it)

Red (Member of BASC, woodland planter, hedgrow planter, woodland grower, woodland plant propogator etc.)

Interesting point Red. Hadn't thought of it from that point. Didn't really look too deeply into what they are about, rather just what they offer, I guess I'm that shallow. Which is wrong, I should give back more to the countryside that I enjoy so much. Still not sure this is the best fit for me, but maybe I'll take the offer from a friend to help out with the local coppice group.

I'd rather you did that jack

Its surprising though the members here that gob off about their "rights". When asked "what have you done in the last three months to contribute to the active management of the contryside" the honest answer is "s** all"

If they haven't built an owl box ...or pulled an inavsive weed...or made a bettle pile...they should hang their head in shame...because they aren't in any way Bushcrafters....they are "takers". The word "parasite" describes them...those that take without giving back.

This is a tiny island. We can have wild spaces...if we give back. Its unfair to ask others to pay for a totally pointless hobby that gives nothing back to the land.

Some dont have spare cash, and i dont see how having a walk across a beach or field in my case costs someone else something? it was there before man and will be after weve all gone, and it wont be asking the animals left to fund it. My head aint hung!

So, to be clear Andy, the farmer should give up his fields to keep areas for footpaths and pay to maintain stiles and gates, but the users of those facilities need not contibute to their maintenance or provision by a single penny? Use it but not pay for it?

Not quite as simple as that Red. A lot of land owners receive large subsidies to simply "look after" land. Those subsidies are tax payer funded.

Well from that point, I do actually already help manage a small wood and work in my spare time on my partners mums small holding. I do tend to hedgerows, fences and footpaths and the like. But I don't class that as giving back to nature as such.

...and that jack, makes you a "contributor" not a "sponger".

I would love someone by the way the way (mountainm), as a landowner, to point out where I can get a subsidy to provide public access to my land. Can you please tell me where to claim my subsidy and under what law?

Greatly appreciated

Mmm probably the "Daily Mail"

For the avoidance of doubt;

For the Owl boxes put up:

£0

For the native hedgerows planted

£0

For the native woodland plants sourced and planted

£0

For the rainwater harvesting system to service the above

£0

Shall I go on?

For all the thousands and thousands of pounds I have invested, in proper, environmentaly friendly, sustainable land management I have invested, how much have I seen from tax money?

Nothing, zip, nada.

Again, please point me to the landowners money for hedging or...owl boxes...or...tree planting....or stiles?

All your choice. I'd love to be in the position of owning some land.

i think just being responsible and respecting the land is more important than anything

i don't think you have to expend money and i understand that alot of people just don't have the time to help and do what they want to do

i mean i wish i had more time to go out and help out or more free cash to help fund projects but i don't so my part is to make sure that i have no negative affect on nature its self which as far as i think is enough

i mean should that mean i should not be able to go out ?

Indeed it is my choice. Which is why it is morally acceptable that I deny access to it to those who aren't prepared to do anything to help manage the land - they just want to take from it.

I consider that eliminating parasites is the duty of every land steward.

But it was your choice to buy the land that has the public right of way on it also...

Ahhh -it has no (legal) public right of way at all.Thats why we bought it - as opposed to the previous place where spongers wanted to take without giving, litter, burn, destroy trees that we had planted, trample wild flowers, "forage" what they had not sewn,

Amazing how many people wish to take out from a small land mass but put nothing back
