Just read some very exciting news, that they Sutton Hoo ship will be recreated.
The Windsor family has donated Oak trees for the construction from their Windsor estate.

I look forward reading about this project.
The Saxon ship was a precursor to the Norse ships, and it will be interesting to see how they will construct it, and the result.
Construction, what can be seen from the few remains, seems to have carried on to the Norse ships ( of which several well preserved remains exist) except that it was ( probably) only rowed. No signs of mast and associated fittings found.

I have read ideas / theories that the northern European (British Isles, North Sea coast, Scandis) could not use their boats on open seas, but had to hug the coasts. That the addition of sail ( Norse ships) made open water sailing possible.
( not sure if science still thinks this though)

I hope the project goes well.
