I usually prefer to go for retort pouches when out camping but have been trying other things this year. The Keith rice steamer is great but I decided to try some freeze dried pouches. IMO Mountain House is the best but can be difficult to get a lot of the choices. Extreme food is good too but not available everywhere. My local Tiso has Summit so I decided to give it a try. I’ve learnt through trial and error that the pouches benefit from being insulated whilst ‘cooking’ so I have some foil covered foam to put the pouches in. Another rule i’ve found is not to put the full recommended amount of water in. Only by about 50ml or so but you can add more if needed, you cannot take too much out though! I also ensure it’s fully mixed before closing the pouch and give it another mix half way through. A great benefit in most food nowadays is the press close seal, it means if your pouch falls over it doesn’t spill all over the place and it stays warmer. I tried the Summit ‘Chicken fried rice’ a weird one that had potential to get really wrong. This was tried at home indoors and I have to say I enjoyed it. A wee sachet of Soy sauce could have improved it a little but if that’s what my dinner was I’d have been happy. I’m happy enough to try some other Summit food and will post updates.
