Newbie asking perhaps silly questions, but be patient with me please :)

I got one of these Made in China decorational swords for free the other day.
As can be imagined it's ugly as f*** but I was wondering if it would be possible to make it into something useful, just using the metal off the blade? Stamp says stainless, reliability questionable, but so far no rust, but no exposure to elements either.

It's similar to the one behind the link http://www.aliexpress.com/item-img/...ured-knife-sword-free-shipping/328401951.html

Would any of you start tinkering with it on is it destined to find it's way ito the recycling center?

I doubt it would make a knife that will hold a good edge, it was made as an ornament and was never really meant to be used so I doubt the steel is up to much.
You could use the steel to practice making a knife just for the experience ? rather than just throw it or just hang it on the wall(if you like it).
