Squirrels Condo??

Saw this tree in Ilkley the other day. Didn't see any squirrels though.
No squirrels nests, it´s a kind of growth in birch branches called ´witches broom` in Dutch. I don´t know what causes it (gall? disease? fungus?)

i'll go with "witches broom" too...
I think squirell dreys tend to be in the forks of branches near the trunk, and
I wouldn't expect to see that many in one tree!

Bushcrafter (boy, I've got a lot to say!)
called witches brooms here too, interesting its the same in dutch. Never heard a good explanation of what causes them.
According tot the Dutch Wikipedia the birch are affected by a fungus
Taphrina betulina (also known as Exoascus betulini).
Whitches broom can also be found in other trees and can be caused by different kinds of fungi, mycoplasma and viruses.
