well, my first knife review...here goes!
at the beginning of our summer shenanigans I got introduced to the Spyderco UK PK, my my friend 'the General'. I was impressed by the ergonomics and the quality straight off the bat- I've only ever owned SAKs and Opinels before. These are fine in their own rights, and i'd thought that so I'd held off shelling out near enough 100 quid for a folder, but then I heard about the UK PK Lightwieght...
after I had a root around online I'd found one shipped for around £45 ...
again I'll say I'm impressed from the outset, it just feels right when you hold it. I've been wary of slip joint knives since I had one close unexpectedly on me in my teens, but with this the way the handle is formed there's a finger groove that's made up of part of the scales, and part of the blade- it's pretty clever ( have a look) it might give you a nasty pinch and a blood blister, but it would save you losing a fingertip! whoever came up with that little feature needs a medal, how many fingertips have been saved since that god knows lol!
the opposite side of the blade too has a nice 'feature' for want of a better term, the thumb brace, it allows for a level of control easily 10x that of my Opinel, you can really get some fine work done with the bottom of the blade, and be able to put a good bit of force down cutting while maintaining incredible control, so again a thumbs up for this! I don't know much about blade grinds but this looks like a hollow grind (someone correct me if I'm wrong lol)
the Scales are FRN and have a criss-cross weave pattern which makes for a sure and firm grip, not rough, but sure- it wont slip out of your hand easily the same way say an SAK would ( ie smooth scales)
the wire pocket clip extends near enough 1/2 way down the scales and it keeps a good grip- it's not going to come out of your pocket unintentionally.
solid build quality all around, nothing loose, nothing rattles. there's a nice re-assuring 'snick' when the blade aligns to the handle when open- this thing ooozes quality.
so if you're thinking the UK PK is a bit rich, I can recommend the poor man's solution the lightweight in a heartbeat, top quality knife an affordable price!!
