Being something of a bargain hunter I don't have a reasonable attitude to how much tools are really worth. This means I have trouble putting a reasonable price on stuff I've done up and found I don't need or already have so I've often
let things go for too little.

The thing is I finally finished restoring some I Sorby goose neck gouges I got at least 8 years back as part of a job lot in a chest. They are very nice, good steel, box wood handles et al but I am sure ill never actually use them. They are pretty specialist kit, for hard core carvers or pattern makers. So since there is a stock knife I want I've decided to shift the gouges to go towards that. Looking at the net I can't fathom a reasonable price to ask for them, Goosenecks are sometimes priced dirt cheap and in other cases they are asking a silly amount for them so trawling the net has just left me more confused not less.

so in your opinions what's the top ball park figure I can expect to get for a set like this?

I made a roll from some up upholstery grade leather

I'd rather not use ebay / auction them, just ask a sensible price.

Cheers!

as you say Tom, difficult to price fairly. you dont say what you paid for them, its irrelevant really but add to that the time and materials to restore them along with possible appreciation and you have a ballpark figure.

Sorby chisels and gouges have a fine pedigree going back some 200 years, if i were looking for a good condition vintage set of Robert Sorby cranked paring gouges such as these, i would expect to pay at least £180. i have among others some straight Sorby, Taylor and a few marples gouges all excellent makers and so worth paying a bit more for. :)

Thanks for that, it gives me something to work with. I ain't going to be greedy but it looks like, assuming someone wants them, I'll be able to fund a significant part of the stock knife from them.

When I got them I also got a fair number of straight gouges which I do use, both in and out canal. I really must make a note of the ones I'm missing as you do see a lot on boots or in junk shops. It's not getting them for the sake of complete sets, it's just much easier to use the correct radius one to get th right shape.

The good news is I can now close my hand fully without whimpering like a big Jessie. In a few days ill be able to start torturing wood again at this rate.

Ps
I'd of course do a straight swap for a stock knife , but I'm not holding my breath!

Normally I'd ask to see what you have to swap as I'd rather have stuff to use than money and do like to see things I've revived go to homes where they will be used. Unfortunately this time the thing I have a slightly irrational craving for requires cash to secure.

On that vague note I'm in the middle of a big clean out and rationalisation of the outdoors kit I've acquired for no good reason and the militaria that was only used after 1965. I've been suffering from mission creep so have ended up with a lot of stuff that was just too much of a bargain, like a bunch of sealed pattern wool shirts.

To be honest I don't know if there's any trade schools doing proper carpentry over here. I'd be happy and consider myself really fortunate if I get over a 100 for them, the stock knife I have a unseemly craving for is £135. I've been intouch with the guy who makes them to see if he can do one like a Greaves I seen some shots of. It speaks to me...

Cheers again folks

Did you get them all together? Maybe with long paring chisels as well?
They are the type of thing that patternmakers used to use.

Yup, all together in a big old pattern makers chest some chap had made in 1952 as part of his apprenticeship. I've kept all the tools including the long pairing chisels which are also great quality.

I've restored everything that came with it except the base plate of a Stanley No. 6 Bailey plane. I've done the rest of it, I even happened to have a new blade picked up on spec' for a quid, but the base is 18 inches long and although I've acquired a long enough piece of wet and dry, from a roll, I don't have a suitable piece of tin float glass to flatten the base on.

Got a 4, a 5 1/2 and a 6 myself.
Hardly ever use the 4, the 5 1/2 is the workhorse and not had the 6 for long.
Have a samurai brand iron in the 5 1/2 and planning on putting one of Veritas's PMV-11 irons in the 6. That size iron is interchangable between the 5 1/2 and the 6 anyway,

Your 6 doesn't have to be absolutely flat mind, just at the right areas if you see what I mean.

Ha! Pretty much the same as I've got!

ive ended up with two 4s as when I Heard Footprint had gone under a few years back I impulse bought a 4 that was in my local hardware shop. Unfortunately it seams to have been slapped together and it still needs fettling properly.

Ive got a couple of unused wooden planes, picked up for peanuts, a small one still in its army stores packaging and a long job that has ad oil or something soak into the base. Ill have to try cleaning it off and using it.

Rediscovered the gouges beneath a huge pile of militaia that's going to be ebayed before Xmas so thought I'd see if anyone wants them here first. Like a idiot I've deleted the pms from someone who offered me a good trade at the time which with changed circumstances I would now go for. D'oh! Unfortunately I can only remember it was a blanket shirt not who made it/ offered it and I don't want to embarrass myself hassling any of the fine makers on the is forum with pms.
