I made some firesteels that i think you might like It's my first attempts in blacksmith, but they all work well and give out good sparks.

That's the bunch:

And this is a present for my friend on his birthday. A complete set for fire lighting.

Good work! What kinds of stone/flint/whatever have you used with them? It looks like a nice piece of flint in the kit you made for your friend.

Ged, I had my little cousin (you may have seen hid on my studio thread) to gather me some flint. For every piece he brought I gave him a quarter. In a week I had a bucked load of flint and a cousin that made fortune I'm sorted for a long time now I don't know any other stones to be used with steel. In theory there are, but I haven't looked for anything else. So my way: FLINT+STEEL+CHARCLOTH = FIRE. Today I found some huge tinder fungus (Horse Hoof) and now want to experiment with it. Came to look for info, read about it a year ago..

quartz is supposed to work

You just need something harder than the steel - quartz will work. (7 on Mohs scale of hardness)
