Solitude and a bit of fun

It has been non-stop all day. Kids swimming lessons, shopping, house chores, cooking dinner! Eventually I got the kids to bed. With the day nearly over, I took the opportunity to get out across the fields for some peace and quiet.

With the wind picking up in the open I began to look for a sheltered spot for a brew. Wandering along a field edge I came across this mushroom.

If anyone knows what kind it is, please let me know. It looked good enough to eat and smelt fine but don't worry I didn't eat it. I don't know what it is.

I sat myself down in the ley of a foot bridge and got out my bit of fun. I have seen a lot of pictures and chats on Bushcraftuk concerning meths burners. I thought they looked really fun to make and use so I did a bit of Google and found that they are simple to make. I made mine from an empty hair wax tin (all about the image me! ) a chunk of roof insulation and a cut to size bit of fine mesh. The lid twists on, which is handy as it doesn't leak and the meths won't evaporate so quickly. I finished off the cook set with a little 100ml bottle for some meths, and a lighter all packed in a little camouflage stuff sack. Why did I choose camouflage? It was the first thing I found in my garage!

I poured some water into my tatonka metal cup and lit my little cooker. I couldn't see the flames at first and nearly scolded my fingers, waving them over the cooker like an idiot... :)
So, on with the water....

I took a quick look at my watch to note the time it took to reach a rolling boil. Six minutes later.....

I poured a 3 in 1 in my little folding cup, gave it a little stir with a cleaned twig and sat back, watching the river slip by I total silence, sharing my spot with some inquisitive cows.

The peace and quiet was just perfect. It's amazing what just two hours of being inside my head can do for the soul. With the sun dipping below the horizon, it was time for home.

Good night!

Sounds great!
The universal trivet from Backpacking light uk, works well with that type of stove - might need to make an adjustment to the trivet with a file, but an easy 5 minute job.

Nice post.

We all need to spend time alone to get our heads together again, and what better way to do that, than doing exactly this.
A river or stream is perfect for that , as the movement of water can be just as hypnotic as flames on a fire...

I like the simplicity of your brew kit, and using rocks or logs to create the pot stand ...

Thanks for the share!
