Has anyone used or got a solar powered charger for things such as mobiles, MP3's etc? if so, how do you find them? and is there any you could recommend?

Thanks in advance

I've got a Powermonkey Explorer, which is a lovely little bit of kit but practically useless when camping - I never have enough time in the sun to get a decent charge on it. I guess it would be fine for a fixed camp, or if you're wearing a rucksack all day with the panel strapped to the top, but anything inbetween tends to become a problem.

I know it's not as environmentally friendly, but I've just ordered a PowerXtender: http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=222545 - drop in a couple of lithium AA's and you're away. Will post how I get on when it arrives.

I was thinking of looking for a wind up recharger for my phone. It wouldn't need it to be sunny then. :umbrella:

I have had a Powermonkey for a couple of years.
I tend to keep it clipped to my sack or on one of the straps. It works well in normal daylight (cloudy day) without direct sun. Its small and light, and mine came with a large array of various adaptors (most of which I would never use). I have used mine for mobile phones and an Ipod. No problems. It just works.

I have a Freeloader solar charger and i think its great, i use it for my phone / ipod.
i spent the extra £20 (so i think it was £55 in total) because then it came with a case and a large solar panel.
I can clip this to my tent / rucksack during the day and it will charge up the battery pack and then i just charge what i need to over night.

Yep, another vote from me for the Freeloader.
