I've been looking for a nice warm top to wear around the tent on cold nights and for mooching around camp.

I was just about to buy a Snugpak Elite Softie Shirt but then came across the Montane Extreme Smock.

Is there any practical difference between the two. As far as I can tell the snugpak will pack smaller and the montane has a better hood.

Whislt I am asking questions, whats the difference between the snugpak pile shirt elite and elite softie shirt. It looks like just a different type of lining and the softie is lighter, they both have same temperature ratings.

Sorry for all the questions but I am rapidly becoming confused (that doesn't take a lot!)

Thanks,

CAL

The snugpak is 'just' a windshirt and while probably a good wind shirt will have minimal thermal properties. The montane is VERY warm if your active and really comfortable when camping. I have a montane extreme smock and jacket and they are both good. The difference between the other two snugpack jackets that you mention, as far as i can tell is that one of them comes with two hoods. If you want a jacket for sitting around a winter camp what about this;

It keeps me warm on scottish winter belays, I love it. :)

Mart,

I was expecting the snugpak to be quite thick, its comfort rating is down to -5, but I haven't seen one in the flesh. I have seen the Montane Smock though and it did look / feel very warm.

I like the look of the RAB jacket but thats a bit expensive for my tastes

The CLimbers shop had a samples sale of Montane stuff a few weekends ago. Half price. COuld get a extreme for £50 or Resolute is it(?) for £75. The latter is similar to the extreme but with waterproof Epic fabric on the outside. All in Medium. Not sure if it closed or whether stuff is available. All in slight variations in Medium or size 12.
