I was out walking along the Avon river trail and there was a lot of bushes
with small, almost iredescent red, berries, the size blueberries.

Also there was evidence of an animal having eaten some.

Any idea what they would be ? Edible ?

Yeah they are a darker red in reality mate - a better image is on the website ( but I like to record where I have found interesting or useful plants with images). They are edible but with care as it says on the link

Hope that Helps

Fred,

It is a great site with lots of useful info, although images are lacking on some posts sadly. Still, a great free resource.

Good call on the bittersweet nightshade there Toddy - should have thought of that myself. Was photographing those guelder roses today and it seemed a great fit - should have though harder!

Guelder Rose, viburnum opulus have very smelly berries when crushed. Woody nightshade berry dont smell much when crushed.

Has anyone tried consuming Guelder fruit, because to me the thought of eating something that smells that bad doesn't seem that plausable. Are you suppose to cook them? I know the vikings ate them, so if it is stinky fruit or cured shark, they might be more appitising.
