I just used some strong gutterman thread from ebay

Twodogs

+1. A sharp needle (not a leather or denim needle-it will cut the fibres) and some Polyester button thread. Easiest is to stitch a box and then sew an X shape in the box.

Fishing braid works well too as thread. :)

I used to sew webbing (sometimes with velcro) on a machine, and found that the normal Gutterman polyester thread tended to break. I think it struggled with abrasion - the webbing I was using was pretty tightly woven. I switched to bonded nylon thread and found it much better. For the tougher stuff when hand sewing, I find the Gutterman polyester is still a bit feeble. Should be find for looser-woven webbing, though.

Would this bonded nylon thread also do for sewing leather? I have a cartridge belt that needs repaired as well?

I dare say the leatherworkers would be better qualified to comment, although the stuff I got is used in some parts of shoe-making. It's pretty thin - similar to the normal Gutterman thread, so might not suit something made of heavier leather.
