Thought I would post this, it does not really fit neatly into any section of the forum, so mods feel free to move it.
Here is an article I have written for our Scout groups bulletin, from an over nighter I organised as a training session for my leaders.
Leader Training
Scouting is not all fun and games. For us, as leaders, to continue delivering a balanced and informed programme we need to do a little training from time to time. Though the scouting network does offer a diverse range of training, sometimes my Leadership team approach me with more specialised requests not available elsewhere.
As Broughton Explorers are all keen on outdoor crafts, it was identified that the leadership team where lacking in the more advanced techniques in the use of cutting tools and so Chopper-fest was born.
The ethos behind this training was; camp overnight in a woodland setting spending the day setting up a camp and using an array of cutting tools to perform more advanced duties then cutting string and sharpening sticks.
Selecting a camp away from the beaten track
Camp set up, and the fire on!
A selection of tools the delegates learned to use safely and efficiently
Using new found skills a Split stick spit and tripod where fashioned, and put to good use.
Split Stick Spit and an unfortunate chicken
As with all activities involving cutting tools the sharps where put away when the sun set and this provided us with the opportunity to sit and watch the chicken cook whilst discussing the days activities
Chicken browning, and the wood pigeon and veg in the Dutch oven
All in all the training was a success. All of the delegates had the opportunity to try out new tools and new techniques, and the food was absolutely out of this world . Ok so on reflection Scouting is fun and games!
