Well flippin nora after trying to measure twice cut once attitude I have managed to balls up and have only about 10mm per side on my scales on the 115mm lapplander. Thus 20mm ish on the total width before final profiling???
Dunno ,whats the ideal thickness would be on a blade of this size?
Suppose it depends on the size of your hands.........mine are smallish.
I guess after a lot of cursing and realising that its been a learning curve I actually enjoyed working with wood again as I do a lot of tinkering with metal.
Also need to find a way of more accurately cutting the scales in half as a senior hacksaw (as expected )without a guide is too hit and miss, guess a guide clamped to it would be better.
Anyway maybe I should stick to sticking bits of metal together!!

I don't think 10mm on either side would be that bad... When I rehandled a clipper the handle ended up at only around 17-18mm thick and I've pretty large hands. Admittedly, it's quite broad...
Count in blade thickness too!

I'd just go ahead with it mate, if it's too thin then you'll know better next time ;)

It depends on how much of a grip you like but personally i would start again as mistakes now only lead to more problems down the road. If your stuck for some wood let me know im sure ill have something knocking about ;)

Good luck with what ever you decide but the main thing is to keep going and enjoy it :)

I use a full size tennant saw then faltten with a chisel then finish with paper flat on a bench. I Then rough out the scales pin and attach then fit scales and shape. A lot of people will have the scales almost finished but i prefer to find the handle shape with the scales on the knife. Take your time and check your progress as you go and enjoy :)

Ta for that guys and thank you for the kind offer. I actually got the scales from a member on here and I would really like to try to get to the end with them. The overall scales with the knife tang and liners I think will be ok, I will get to finishing before glueing and make a decision.
Got some more wood left from MIke Hill and I do want to rescale my sak so worst case I wont scrap them.Dave

If you glue them and it doesnt work out just throw it in boiling water a couple of times and you can rip them off again :) Good luck !

10mm per side isnt so bad I usually allow that on a woodlore style knife, if I buy scales already cut they are about 10mm this knife I cut them 10mm thick and its got no liners
