it was my name first...

seriously though, i know someone who has the tomtom and the software seems good, but from what i have seen (havent played with one closely) the Navman units seems better bigger scree better mounting etc..!

I can vouch for the TomTom one.

You can even get TomTom for some mobile phones, assuming you have one of course. :D

Before my dad had a TomTom sat nav, he used some sort of PDA style thing ... which was c**p IMHO ...
- I got lost when I drove in his car once ... so didn't used it anylonger after that and returned to the old fashioned map.
- I found it quite rubbish you had to use a plastic pencil to touch the screen ... especially whilst driving and you got lost in all the other functions (diary, phonebook, etc.) ...
- I really like the 3D style way of showing your position (probably with other sat navs aswell ...): I find it easier to anticipate on upcoming situations: large roundabouts, etc.

Drawback would be the price compared to others, but on the other hand: you get superb quality!

Conclusion: I would vouch for TomTom aswell :drive: :approve:

Hope this helps matey!

Garmin streetpilot c310
You can get it for under £300
It got me from the center of london to somewhere deep in the fells of cumbria without blinking an eye. I made several wrong turns due to traffic and not being in the right lane ( although it did tell me s " stay right/ left etc " ) and it just says " recalculating" and gives you an alternative route.
The alternative is tomtom 300, they are both similarly priced.
It has night mode for the screen and easily adjustable sound when tou want to shut it up cos you know where you are.
Couldn't be simpler to use straight from the box. Stick it on your windscreen and so long as it can see the sky it aquires a satelite and pinpoints your position to 10metres.
I was a skeptic at first but this thing inspires great confidence to jump in the car and explore . Also you can download speed camera locations free and add favourite addresses to the menue.
I didn't trust it at first but one of the reasuring things about the 310 is that you can see all the different street names comming up and check it's not having a laugh.
I got mine for the north meet and got my money back when i came back as i couldn't justify the £300 but i believe amazon do them for £270 ish. Yes i own Amazon .com :lmao: ( joke ) :D .
I would reccomend getting the hard plastic case so you don't damadge it when you take it out of the car as it's not the sort of thing you want to leave lying around.
I don't think it's much good for navigating on foot though, it is realy just an incar thing, same as tomtom realy except i heard Garmin started them first. Funny what branding will do for a product eh? :)

What do you mean Grez?
Can you load something onto a normal mobile and it act like a sat nav?

Cheers

The Nokia 5140 has a cover with a built in GPS receiver that you can buy so it stands alone as sat nav, I don't know how good it is as I have not seen any anywhere apart from ebay!
My brother uses a nokia 6600, that has blue tooth and an externalGPS receiver that he leaves on the dashboard that he reckons is really good. The GPS receiver is about half the size of the phone and I think works with most blue tooth phones. The Tom Tom is software that it works with.

We sort of.

TomTom do a version for mobile phones, but it only works on certain phones. I used to use it on my nokia 6600 but I have since upgraded my phone and now use the PDA version instead.
