Hi, thanks for reading!

Does anyone know where I could get some black “rubber” (natural not required) sheet or tile around 4 or 5 mm thick and at least about 10” square?

Before you go all kinky on me, I’ve scratched my bike’s petrol tank with an undone press stud on my jacket and I want to stick a rubber patch on the tank to stop it happening again.

Many thanks,

Andy

They make stick on tank defenders for that very purpose. Used to have a set on my R6, were only a few quid too.

As above really. You can buy rolls of plastic (or bits of) from alot of the off road specialists, but then you have to fit it to the tank and that'll bugger it up even more.
Any half decent bike shop will sell the tank guards or you can go the whole hog and get one of those all encompassing leather covers that allow you to fit a tankbag as well (not the cheapest option though)

if you have a hienke gerrick near you they do rolls of thick clear sticky back plastic, 3mm thick for just this job, put it anywhere you will get scratches, tank, fork legs, side panels, rear hump for luggage etc,....only a couple of quid and you cut it to whatever size you need.

Thanks all,

I know you can get tank protectors, but the design of all of them (the skeletal design that allows them to accommodate the complex curves of the tank) means they will not cover up the damage I’ve already done, and I don’t want a protector that you can see scratches through. Thanks for the suggestions though. Also thanks for the idea of the leather wrap, but I don’t fancy one. I’ve been to my local Hein Gericke, but all they could offer were thin A4 sheets of self-adhesive carbon fibre look plastic which wouldn’t lie over the cuvees of the tank without bubbles. What I need, I think, is either a re-spray or some thick rubber sheet.

In the woods if possible.
Have you considered a tank cover which can take a tank bag? For me, a tank bag really is the most useful thing on a bike and it's the first thing I fit whenever I get one. I use BagLux covers and bags, the tank covers are made to fit each individual model and fasten down securely with clips and straps. The bags attach to the covers with clips and are more or less interchangeable, although some bags are a bit on the bulky side for some bikes. There are several other kinds of cover and bag. Some bags that attach magnetically so need no cover, which might not be what you want.

I couldn't find a bra for the GS but Many thanks for all your help, but I’ve found what I needed. A company called PAR (http://www.par-group.co.uk/) make just what I needed, self adhesive 3mm black rubber sheet, and they happened to have a trade counter just up the road. The guy brought the stuff out, 8” by about 4’, it looked perfect, but he said “it’s very expensive, what do you want it for” I told him, he said” I’ve got a bandit; put a quid in the charity box and we’ll say no more”!

Result.
