Red cracked boletes

In the last few weeks, I have noticed a sudden explosion (not literally ;) ) of red-cracked boletes at a sight near me in west London. My mushroom book lists them as edible but there is a big difference between "not poisonous" and "nice to eat".

Are they worth gathering?

The same sight also has a a good show of plate-sized shaggy parasols and common puffballs at the moment but sadly no ceps (my personal favourite).

Amazing how many varieties you notice once you start to get your eye in.

I have some dried red cracked boletus. They don't seem particularly potent, and as steve says they're not that highly prized.

Apparently best used in soups....?

Agreed. They are best dried, and used with other 'shrooms in soups or stews.

I have fried them fresh, on site, and the taste is uninspiring :(

Thanks for your comments.

Bit of a shame they don't taste better - they are quite plentiful at the moment.
