You really need a good spring tide on the ebb or low water to get as far down the shoreline as possible and clean sand...
They normally give an indication of where they are by squirting water jets when they sence your footfall near their burrows, but can be found in key hole shape tunnels into the sand.

Walking backwards along the low waters edge makes the jets they spray easier to find.

A bag of household salt, with around 1 teaspoon (appx) poured directly into the burrow will see them rise anything from a few seconds to a few mins later.

Unlike mussels ect, they dont normally contain sand.

Pour very salty water on their hole (fnar) then grab em quickly when they peep out?

I meant, how do you egt the sand out from inside the shells not the shells out of the sand. I was eating a different kind of clam last night and some of those were a bit gritty.
