Interesting. Only seen a raised fire built on a table, with gravel and sand layer to prevent the fire going through.
 
Good method for cooking use on deep snow/ice.

Not sure it would be an effective heater set that high - lower platform and reflector possibly better.

The style reminded me of the manger smoke signal set up.

Might be worth trying to work up a combination - a lower-set manger style, cross logs for the fire, with a reflector at the rear and an open front?
